Hey John, would love to try it out for you. Grandkids are almost old enough to start reading the good stuff to them. So I hope you will shoot me a copy.
PS i am almost finished with my BA in creative Writing at UCR. Hoping to be in the MFA program come Fall of 2015.

    • Congratulations!
Do you want to wait until the book is finished (15 chapters) or would you like to read what I have so far (10 chapters)? If you want it now I have a PDF of the latest draft; just tell me where to send it.

  2. I’m very interested in being a reader for you, the story sounds delightful. But I do want to ask what you would need from me reading it? Critique? Editing? Or just to see if it sounds in order? I review books about once a month on my blog, which you are welcome to check out so you can get an idea of how I look at things. I rarely review YA or juvenile books, but I love good ones and I’m always on the lookout for them. Let me know what you are looking for as a beta reader and I hope I can help.

    • Kate,

I’m delighted to hear from you. To be honest, I don’t actually know what I’m going to need from my betas at this point; I’ve never done this before. However I’m certain whatever level of interaction you’re comfortable with will be very helpful.

Most likely I will not need a lot of critiquing, as each of the chapters have (or will have) gone through that process at What I’ll be looking for is overall consistency and whether or not the story works as a whole, are the characters believable, does the story slump in the middle, is the ending satisfying, that sort of thing.

How will I reach you when I’m ready for your services (in a few months)?

      • Wonderful. Whatever you want is fine with me, but I look forward to reading the story and making sure it sounds good. ๐Ÿ™‚ Honestly, I’ve never done this either, so hey, you get to be the guinea pig and I can learn from you! No, I have a short story in stasis right now that at some point I want to send off to have it reviewed over. I never thought about beta testing till now. Great idea!
You can reach me at My gravatar should have all the details if you lose my email. And if you need mailing address, email me.

  5. Hey, John,
I am new to beta-reading, and would be glad to help you, if I can. I’m a freelance editor, fairly new to the business. I’ve got 6 books under my belt, 3 published and 3 in process. Please visit my website, for more info about rates, etc.
i don’t know a lot about fees for beta reading, but would like to discuss this further. One question: Have you considered self-publishing? Just curious.
I think it’s wonderful that you have such a great co-author!
    Best wishes,
    Vicki P.

    Hey John.

I’m interested in beta-reading. If you send me the file when it’s done, I’ll send it back with notes and thoughts on everything from grammar to characters to story arc. I’m NOT a professional writer but I do know my way around the writing world a little from working on my own book and posting chapters on CC. Email me at when it’s done or if you have questions! I look forward to reading it.

    Is this still a thing?

    • Sure! We are always happy to get a critique of our first book, and frankly since the revise and resubmit we have had precious little feedback. If you post your e-mail, we’ll send you our shiny new manuscript. And thanks in advance.

    Merry Christmas!

    • I can provide you with a Word document, a PDF, or I have an ePub version, which will work on most e-readers, including iPhones and iPads. Unfortunately, Kindle has its own format which I can’t create. Which version would you like mento send you?

    Word is good

  13. Amira says:

    Hello again ๐Ÿ™‚

I showed my friend your blog and told her your novel is good! She wants to read it, but is uncomfortable putting her email in the comments. If you’re still looking for more betas, can I send her your email address or send you hers?
